Why do children become more vulnerable to illnesses? Advice from our pediatrician
Spring is a time of awakening for nature, with warm sunshine and longer days. However, for many parents, it is also a period of increased illness among children. Why does this happen? Our pediatrician explains the main reasons.
1. Spring temperature fluctuations and the body’s adaptation
Spring is a period when the weather changes almost every hour: cool in the morning, warm during the day, and cold again in the evening. Such contrasts put additional strain on a child’s body. The immune system, which is still developing, is forced to constantly adapt to new conditions, expending a lot of energy. As a result, the body becomes more vulnerable to viruses and bacteria.
2. Vitamin D deficiency:
After the winter period, when there are fewer sunny days and children spend more time indoors, the level of the important immunity-boosting vitamin D may decrease. A deficiency of this substance weakens the body’s natural defenses, making it more susceptible to various infections.
3. Vitamin deficiency:
The winter diet is often limited to certain foods, and children may lack fresh vegetables and fruits, which are natural sources of essential vitamins and minerals. This spring nutrient deficiency can also negatively affect the immune system and increase the risk of illnesses.
4. Activation of viruses:
Spring’s changing weather, with fluctuations in humidity and temperature, creates favorable conditions for the spread of certain viruses that affect the respiratory system. After the winter holidays, children again interact actively in groups – in kindergartens, schools, and playgrounds – which makes it easier for infections to spread.
5. Seasonal allergic reactions:
With the onset of plant blooming – trees and grasses – children who are prone to allergies may experience unpleasant symptoms. While the allergy itself is not an infection, inflammation of the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract caused by allergens can increase their susceptibility to viral infections.
What actions can parents take to maintain their child’s health?
- Balanced diet: Enrich your child’s menu with a variety of seasonal vegetables and fruits, which are natural sources of vitamins.
- Outdoor activity: Regardless of the temperature, encourage daily walks, as being outside helps strengthen the immune system and produce vitamin D on sunny days.
- Clothing according to the weather: Teach your child to dress in layers to avoid both overheating and chills.
- Vitamin D level monitoring: If your child spends little time in the sun, discuss the possibility of additional vitamin D supplementation with a doctor.
- Hygiene habits: Emphasize the importance of regular handwashing with soap after being outside and before eating.
- Daily routine: Ensure that your child gets enough sleep and time to rest.
- Attention to health condition: If the first symptoms of illness appear, seek medical help.
During the spring period, it is especially important to follow simple recommendations from your doctor — and you will help your child enjoy this wonderful time, staying healthy and energetic!
