The thyroid is a small but crucial gland that produces hormones essential for the proper functioning of the body. The test that visualizes this gland and detects potential abnormalities is a thyroid ultrasound. The thyroid is a small endocrine gland located below the larynx at the front of the neck. Its main function is to produce two hormones: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones participate in metabolic processes and influence the functioning of various systems: cardiovascular, nervous, reproductive, and growth processes. If the thyroid does not function properly, various concerning symptoms may appear. Besides blood hormone tests, the primary imaging test in such situations is thyroid ultrasound.

Indications for Thyroid Ultrasound

Indications for thyroid ultrasound include palpable enlargement of the gland, nodules, changes in thyroid consistency, neck pain, difficulty swallowing, and persistent hoarseness.

Contraindications for Thyroid Ultrasound

There are practically no absolute contraindications for thyroid ultrasound – the procedure is safe, non-invasive, and completely painless. It can be performed on pregnant women, newborns, and elderly people with chronic diseases whenever there are health indications.

Preparation for the Ultrasound

How to prepare for a thyroid ultrasound? It is not particularly complicated. You do not need to fast before the test, and it can be performed at any time of the day. It is advisable to wear clothing that can be unbuttoned to expose the neck and part of the chest, so there is no need to remove the upper clothing. For convenience, it is better not to wear necklaces, chains, etc.

How is Thyroid Ultrasound Performed?

Thyroid ultrasound is performed in a lying position on the back. The doctor applies an ultrasound probe covered with gel to the patient’s neck and moves it to visualize the thyroid and surrounding tissues visible on the monitor. During the ultrasound, the size, volume, tissue characteristics of the thyroid, as well as the presence of nodules, cysts, or other abnormalities can be assessed. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes.
