Testicular ultrasound is a completely non-invasive, painless, and entirely safe examination used in the prevention and diagnosis of testicular disorders. It uses the properties of ultrasound waves emitted by a special probe that penetrate deep into the body. These waves reflect off tissues, and the echo returns to the probe and is transformed by the computer into images visible on the monitor. This allows the doctor to obtain a precise image of all the structures and tissues of the testes.

Indications for Testicular Ultrasound

Testicular ultrasound is performed for patients experiencing the following symptoms:
  • testicular pain,
  • perineal pain,
  • testicular swelling,
  • presence of blood in the ejaculate,
  • erectile problems,
  • infertility. The most commonly diagnosed conditions using testicular ultrasound include undescended testes, testicular inflammation, hydrocele, varicocele, testicular hematomas, abscesses, or testicular torsion. Testicular ultrasound is also very helpful in diagnosing mechanical injuries and testicular cancer.

Contraindications for Testicular Ultrasound

The only relative contraindication for testicular ultrasound is the presence of a large wound in the area. The procedure can be performed on any male, regardless of age. It is completely painless and entirely safe, having no impact on sexual function or fertility.

Preparation for Testicular Ultrasound

No special preparation is required for a testicular ultrasound. Of course, it is advisable to maintain hygiene in the intimate area before the test (removal of hair is not necessary). It is also helpful to bring previous medical records if available.

How is Testicular Ultrasound Performed?

Testicular ultrasound typically lasts from a few to several minutes. The patient enters the examination room and is asked to remove the lower part of clothing and underwear. The patient then lies on the examination table, and the doctor applies a special gel to the scrotum, which facilitates both the movement of the probe over the skin and the penetration of waves into the tissues. In some cases—especially when varicocele is suspected—the ultrasound may also be performed in a standing position.
