Ultrasound of muscles, soft tissues, and periarticular structures is a primary imaging test for diagnosing injuries and diseases of muscles and surrounding tissues. It is safe, painless, and completely non-invasive. USG of muscles, soft tissues, and periarticular structures allows for the diagnosis of injuries, damage, and various abnormalities not only within the muscle but also in all surrounding tissues. These include muscle-tendon junctions, tendons with attachments, muscle bellies, as well as tendon sheaths, bursae, vessels, nerves, fascia, and subcutaneous tissue.

Indications for Muscle and Tendon Ultrasound

USG of muscles, soft tissues, and periarticular structures is used for diagnosing:
  • muscle or tendon strains,
  • muscle or tendon ruptures,
  • bruising of muscles or soft tissues,
  • localized soft tissue pain,
  • muscle or tendon overuse conditions,
  • nerve compression by hematomas and muscle swelling,
  • presence of foreign bodies in soft tissues. Additionally, USG of muscles allows for the assessment of muscle-tendon apparatus rotation or the detection of changes such as tumors or cysts.

Contraindications for Muscle, Tendon, and Soft Tissue Ultrasound

As mentioned, USG of muscles, soft tissues, and periarticular structures is a safe, painless procedure without risk of complications. Therefore, there are no major contraindications to its use. A doctor may only postpone the ultrasound if there are fresh wounds or burns on the skin in the examined area. Once healed, the test can be performed.

Preparation for Muscle, Soft Tissue, and Periarticular Ultrasound

USG of muscles, soft tissues, and periarticular structures does not require any special preparation. You can eat, drink, and take your regular medication before the test. It can be performed at any time of the day. It is advisable to bring any previous medical records and wear loose, comfortable clothing to easily expose the area to be examined.

How is Muscle and Tendon Ultrasound Performed?

USG of muscles, soft tissues, and periarticular structures is not a complicated test. The patient is asked to expose the area for examination and to assume the appropriate position (standing or lying down). The doctor applies gel to the skin, which facilitates the movement of the probe and the penetration of ultrasound waves into the body. After applying the probe, tissues and organs are immediately visible on the monitor. The doctor may ask the patient to perform specific movements to assess the function of muscles and tissues in motion. The entire procedure takes about 20 minutes.
